Community Service Requirements and FAQs

Lutheran West strongly advocates for the importance of community service. Consequently, community service is an important element of our students' Christian educational experience. Below, please find requirements and commonly asked questions regarding student service.

What makes community service an integral part of the Lutheran West experience?
The call to have "Christian outsight" beyond the walls of our homes and school comes directly from Scripture. In Matthew 25, Jesus reminds us that our response to the hungry, thirsty, homeless, naked, sick and imprisoned among us will be considered as done to Him. Our Lord’s expectation for helping others is clear and we are consequently, as a community, dedicated to developing the lifelong habit of community service within each of our students.

Why is community service a requirement?
We believe that positive behaviors take time to develop into habits. Among the many positive habits that we seek to develop at Lutheran West is the commitment to serving one's fellow humans, one's community, and one's world. In placing an emphasis on the importance of community service during the immensely formative high school years, we are hopeful that our students, through their service experiences, will gain a commitment to continuing such activity into adulthood.

Why does the required number of hours increase with each grade level?
The chart below, shown by class year, shows the number of hours required by the end of each school year. As a Luthearn West student grows in his/her Christian faith and maturity the expectation is for the student to have more opportunity to serve. In a practical sense, many of our 11th and 12th grade students have greater access to vehicles to be able to travel to service sites.
